Birch Trees in Fall
Birch Trees in Fall

I've begun to experiment with fabric art.  I just love it all!  I enjoy my quilting but I saw a show on Sewing with Nancy and watched a fabric artist do some birch trees.  Of course, this is just a days work on experimenting but I had fun!

'Birch Trees in Alaska's Fall'
"Birch Trees in Alaska's Fall"
This is a larger piece.  I used fabric, added batting to give more dimension, yarn, paper, silk flowers and glitter.

'A Pink Delight' = Fireweed
"A Pink Delight" = Fireweed
I had a blast making this.  It's about 10 1/2 " square, reinforced with heavy batting.  The fireweed is made of home-made paper (given to me by a friend & local artist, Nancy King), batik fabric is the background, yarn for dimension, my favorite Martha Stewart glitter, and cardstock printed paper.  The button is a large button and it just finishes off the artword.  Fireweed is everywhere in Alaska, it really should have been our state flower.

White dainty flowers = Dogwood
White dainty flowers = Dogwood
This is about 10 1/2 inch square.  I used very "airy" paper for the dogwood flowers, fabric, natural yarn, homemade paper (thanks again Nancy King), fabric pens, printed cardstock and of course, glitter.

'Forget Me Nots' = Alaska's State Flower
"Forget Me Nots" = Alaska's State Flower
This is about 10 1/2 " square.  Homemade blue paper (thank you Nancy King again) was used for the forget-me-not petals,  fabric, natural yarn,  fabric pens, printed cardstock and of course, glitter finished off the project.

'Pretty Poppies'
"Pretty Poppies"
This is about 10 1/2 inch square.  I used pink and yellow homemade paper for the poppies,  fabric, natural yarn, fabric pens, printed cardstock and of course, glitter.

'Full Moon'
"Full Moon"
Inspired by a full moon in November, this was created using birch bark, fabric, fabric pens, homemade paper and glitter.

I had fun creating this spring wall fiberart in February in Alaska.

I really can't take credit for doing much with this gorgeous piece of material that my friend brought back to me from one of her travels.  Isn't it just spectacular? How beautiful of a bedspread/quilt that'd make, huh?

I quilted it using blue thread, added beads and then framed it with black fabric.

Never be afraid to experiment.  I have found that the best way for me to get better at this quilting and fiberart thing is to practice on smaller pieces like a 10" X 10" swath of fabric.  I also started having fun just finding out about the stitches that are on my machine, using varied threads and just "going for it".

My gosh, people are so talented....but if you want to have fun, improve your quilting, beading, binding and general sewing skills, this is the best way.
